This tea bowl is also typical Oribe black. After being thrown on the potter’s wheel, it has been changed in a very strong hand-turned style. However, the base of the bowl has been cut out in a surprisingly simple manner. Like the previous example, this piece was probably fired in the kiln at Motoyashiki, but it was probably made in the first half of the Keicho era (1615-1868). The distortion is so strong that it lacks straightforwardness, but there are few examples of this type.
It is one of the most interesting Oribe black pieces. The glaze is well melted and has a moist glaze surface. The box is inscribed “Matsushima” on the front of the lid in ink by Enshu. It was handed down to the Kobori family in Kyoto. There are surprisingly few Setoguro pieces that have been handed down with a proper history, except for a few pieces owned by Rikyu, so this piece is interesting because it belonged to Enshu.
