This piece looks like a Yi Dynasty jar, but it is not Yi Dynasty. Among the many Karatsu jars, this one is particularly powerful, and is highly valued because it is one of the few examples of its kind. The entire body is thick, and the base has been cut into a solid bamboo joint shape. The rich tension of the body and the wide mouth give this jar a sense of power. The body is coated with iron glaze, iron paint is sprinkled on the shoulder holes, and straw ash glaze is applied over the entire surface except for the base, resulting in a so-called mottled karatsu style. It is estimated to have been made at the Okawara kiln of the Matsuura family.
