Bizen wine bottle with “fire marks”

Ceramic, Japan, Bizen,

Height 11.3 cm, mouth diameter 2.7 cm, body diameter 8.1 cm, bottom diameter 5.2 cm Hatakeyama Memorial Museum
This small sake cup has a slightly sloping head and slightly imposing shoulders. The flat bottom is incorrectly circular and the mark is spatula-engraved. The body is almost entirely covered with a hidasuki (a scarlet tasuki), and there are a few places where the white clay surface is visible. It is probably one of the darkest and most vivid of all the Tokutoshi of this type. The shoulder is also marked. The Hidasuki is made by wrapping straw around a vessel and firing it without directly exposing it to the flame, and is probably one of the most exquisite natural techniques found in ancient pottery.
