Ōhi I: tea bowl, known as “Mimei”, amber glaze

Height: 8.2 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.6 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.8 cm
This tea bowl is also said to reflect the tastes of Sensō. It is crafted with a thin wall throughout, featuring a rounded, flared lower section, a tapered upper body, and a rounded rim that curves inward. This unique form is typical of the tea bowls attributed to the First Generation Ōhi that are said to reflect Sensō’s preferences. A distinct tomoe-patterned headband is depicted inside the foot ring, and the interior features a deep tea pool with a stepped rim. The entire surface is covered in amber glaze; the area around the foot ring is reddish, while the lower section has a slightly blackened finish. A single swirl pattern, characteristic of Senso’s style, is applied near the lower section. On the inside of the inner box lid, Sensō has written “Mi-mei Sōshitsu (seal),” and on the inside of the outer box lid: a label stating: “Fired to the liking of Sensō, a disciple of the first-generation Ōhi. The quality of this tea bowl surpasses that of Ichinuki. Consequently, the first-generation master sought it out in Kaga Province. Treasured by Ro-gin (seal).” This suggests that it was highly prized by Toda Ro-gin of Tanimatsuya, a renowned connoisseur.
