Former name of Arita-cho, Nishimatsuura-gun, Saga Prefecture. Sarayama is the name given to the area where porcelain was produced. Although the name “Arita Sarayama” is sometimes found in ancient documents in general, there are no official documents in which it is simply written “Sarayama” and the word “Arita” is appended. The name “Rekizan” or “Hizan” is a Chinese rendering of “Sarayama”. After the Meiji Restoration, Sarayama was renamed Arita Village and Sotoo Village was renamed Shin Village, but when Arita Village became a town in 1889 (Meiji 22), Shin Village was renamed Arita Village.
