Egaratsu (painted Karatsu)

Karatsu ware with iron painting. It is said to have been made after the Keicho period (1596-1615), the period following that of Seto Karatsu, which antique dealers call among Karatsu specialties. The clay is red clay with an ash glaze and is very rich. The paintings are in the form of grass paintings. Various types of bowls, plates, and bowls are available. One of the famous Ekaratsu bowls is a tea bowl with a chrysanthemum and paulownia crest, which was handed down from the Yabunouchi family. Hideyoshi Toyotomi had this bowl fired while he was in Nagoya (Chinzei-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture), and gave it to Kenchu, the ancestor of the Yabunai family, after his return to Kyoto. (Kogei Shiryo, Taisho Meikikan)
