A type of fire-measuring device. In the round kilns of the Seto region in Aichi Prefecture, a small vessel is placed in the upper part of the front of the kiln where it can be seen clearly from the difference hole in the fire front, and this is called e-dashi. A simple line is drawn on it with gosu and a white glaze is applied. The white glaze is then exposed to a so-called “Nereshi-Sumibe,” and as the fire temperature rises, the white glaze from the kiln begins to melt, and when the under glaze becomes visible, it is ready to be fired in the blame firing. Otherwise, the product will not be reduced, and if the firing process is started earlier, carbon precipitation will occur, and the desired porcelain will not be obtained.
