Jingdezhen Pottery Record

marusankakusikaku

Chinese pottery book. Original work by Aipo Hamanan of Changan, supplemented by the pupils Zheng Tinggui and Meng Gui. Ten volumes. At the beginning of the volume there is a preface dated 1870 (Daqing Tongji 9) and a preface dated 1815 (Jiaqing 20), and at the end there are traces of Zheng Tinggui’s later calligraphy of the same year. The present copy was engraved in 1898 (Guangxue 24). A Japanese translation was published by Hosokawa Kaiyakudo of Kyoto in 1907. According to the preface by Tomioka Tessai, the true translator is Miura Chikusen, while Fujie Nagataka merely mentions his name. This translation is riddled with errors and should be treated with caution. For more information on the “Tōroku” and the Japanese translation, see Ozaki Shinsen’s detailed discussion in “Chawan” No. 42 and following.
