Shinnyodo

Chukkyo specialties. Kinkasan Charyu, Shinnyodo Tebon-uta. The inscription is by Kobori Enshu and was originally from Shinnyo-do’s Toyo-bo in Kyoto. The shoulders are tightly pointed, with black glaze in a persimmon-gold color and a jet-black pattern. The black glaze is particularly dark around the shoulders, and it is intricately interwoven with the kaki-kinke to form an interesting scene. The glaze is brilliant and the shape is majestic, giving the impression of a seated person wearing a robe and crown. It can be said to be of the highest grade among the Kinkasan kilns. After Toyobo, he worked for Matsudaira Sakon Shogun, Tsuchiya Sagamimori, Matsudaira Iga-mori, the lord of Shinano Ueda, and Akahoshi Yanosuke before joining the Sumitomo family in 1917.
