Seto Karatsu
Seto Karatsu

One of the so-called Karatsu specialties of antique dealers. There are two types of Karatsu: Seto Karatsu and Honte Seto Karatsu, the former of which is highly regarded as an antique. The former is highly valued for its antiquity. It is said to have this name because it uses the glaze of Owari Seto, and it is said to have this name because it closely resembles Seto. White glaze is applied with white clay.
It has cracks in the glaze in the shape of a tortoise shell, and these cracks are extremely large. It is characterized by the so-called “skin whale” with a black glaze on the mouth rim in the style of a flat tea bowl. The Honte type is a bowl shape, and among tea masters, the Honte type is said to be older than the Skin Whale type. According to the results of recent excavations, shards similar to Honde Seto Karatsu have been found at the Iidong Kiln, Iidong Jangjo Kiln, Hobashira Kiln, and Donoyadani Kiln at Kishidake, but the true place of origin of Seto Karatsu is still unknown.
