Sung Sansai
Sung Sansai

Lead-glazed variegated ceramics produced during the Song dynasty in China, which are in the tradition of Tang Sansai and Liao Sansai. The bright colors used include green, white, yellow, and brown, and sometimes four or two colors are used. The patterns are made by dyeing flowers and plants, figures, poems, etc., and carved lines are added to the outlines of the patterns to prevent the colored glaze from bleeding through and mixing with the glaze. There are relatively few vessels such as bottles and jars, and most of them are pillows. This type of ware was produced at various kilns of the Shizhou kiln lineage during the Song and Yuan dynasties, and is related to Song red glaze ware in a brotherly relationship.
