Tochi
Tochi

A type of kiln furniture. It is used to place the porcelain base to be fired in a Seto kiln. It is used to prevent distortion of the vessel. A piece made of the same clay as the vessel is called a kyodochi, and it is used only once. A flat plate made of silica sand mixed with a small amount of wood knots and fired is called a sunadochi. It is also called suridochi because it is used many times and the surface is flattened by rubbing each time. In the Kyoto area, it is also called tochin or tochimi. In Korea, tochim is the Korean word for “ceramic pillow,” and in the Kyushu region, tochin is a tall, pillow-shaped table on which to bake dishes. The Korean name is probably the original, while the Seto and Kyoto regions’ tochi and tochin are probably variants of the original.
