Height 6.9cm, mouth diameter 13.7cm, base diameter 5.0cm
We have seen two black flat tea bowls by Chojiro, but we do not know of any other red flat tea bowls. The overall shape is thinly molded, and the workmanship is similar to that of “Shunkan,” suggesting that it was made by the same artist. The mouth is held slightly inward, one side of the body is slightly tightened, and the body is gently rounded from the edge of the high stand to the waist, and the high stand is small and tight. The base of the bowl is small and tight, and the base is narrow and tight. The cup is wide, with a shallow tea bowl, and the base is thin.
The glaze is thinly applied and some parts have a light rat color, but most of the inner glaze has fallen off, leaving the clay surface intact. Although it has not been introduced so far, it is considered to be one of the outstanding pieces of Chojiro ware Akaraku tea bowls.
However, it is regrettable that it is heavily damaged. It once belonged to the Konoike family in Osaka, and records show that it was used for Konoike Zen’emon’s gaga tea ceremonies during the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is housed in a tame-nuri (lacquered) box, and “Chojiro ware red tea bowl” is written on the front of the lid in silver powder script written in a style typical of Sotan.
