Shino incence burner with cherry and plover design

Shino incence burner with cherry and plover design

Height 6.1 cm, mouth diameter 7.4 cm, bottom diameter 6.0 cm
This cylindrical incense burner, with its mouth rim slightly twisted inward, was clearly created as an incense burner. The base is carved out to a large size, and the inside of the base is shallowly carved. The body is roughly painted with waves, plovers, cherry blossoms, and other motifs in thick brush strokes for such a small vessel. The glaze over the entire body is rather thin, and there are bright red burns throughout. There is a rounded mark in the base that has been burnished red. This is an extremely rare example of this type of work.
