There are very few Shino flower vases in the Shino tradition, and only a few are known to have survived.
This vase is one of the most outstanding examples, and was once a favorite of Itsuo Kobayashi. The citrine shape is clearly modeled after a celadon vase from the Yuan dynasty, and like the Tenmoku bowl, it can be accepted as a Japanese adaptation of a Tang ware. A faint reddish tinge appears around the waist, and there is also a reddish tinge around the neck. There seems to have been iron powder in the base, and one black spot is also impressive. It is estimated to have been made at the Muta-do kiln in Ohgaya, and is thought to be one of the earliest Shino wares.
