This is a long, square, flat bowl with a large, arched hand in the shape of a split bamboo, and two sides are cut off. As is the case with all of these bowls, the bowl is molded, and there are traces of linen cloth inside the bowl that was used to facilitate the molding process. White and red clay are joined together on the diagonal, with green glaze on the white clay and white clay and rust painting on the red clay, overlaid with feldspar glaze. The design of chrysanthemums on the front is also in keeping with the spirit of the sukiya, or “sukijin,” or “suki” in Japanese. This bowl in particular is outstanding for its smooth finish. The bottom of the bowl has the usual Oribe ware leg like a folded nail attached to the four sides.
