Flower vase with handles, Chōsen-garatsu type

Both of these vases are excellent examples of Korean karatsu vases, which are often oddly shaped for this type. It seems to have been fired as a pure tea ceremony ware, and the influence of Oribe’s taste for artifice is remarkable. In particular, Figure 254 has a pentagonal chamfered body, and is of exceptional workmanship. The glazed surface of each piece is glazed to a high sheen. They may have been made at the Uchigaso-gama in Takatori.
