Height 8.0 cm, mouth diameter 22.1 cm, bottom diameter 11.4 cm
This is one of the most prestigious of the katamono types, with an octagonal mouth. The inside and outside are divided in eight directions, and the four sides are decorated with a circle design in white on a lapis lazuli ground, and the other four sides with a circle design in red on a red ground, with a design of blue ocean waves, cloisonne enamel, and flowers and plants such as peonies. The five “flying phoenix roundels” in the foreground are in the same style as those on small bowls generally referred to as Kakiemon hand-decorated bowls. The inscription “Made in the year of the dawn of Manryaku” is written in underglaze blue within a double circle on the base of the bowl, but it can be said that this work conveys well the style of Jianyasu rather than the Manryaku style.
