This is a typical example of red enamel ware for export, and was probably made in the late Kanbun period. The shape of the vessel, with a step at the waist, is in the so-called fuyote style, which was very popular at the time. The composition of the design on the prospective surface also follows that of Fuyote. The design is expressed entirely in overglaze enamels, without using underglaze blue for the base. The octagonal window with an octagonal outlook shows a taiko-seki stone, peonies, flowers and grasses, and two geese on the upper and lower sides. Although the depiction is somewhat crude, the colors of the paint are rich and have a unique stylistic beauty. This is probably the second earliest example of red painting for export. The reverse side is also decorated on three sides with a branch pattern, and the inscription “Kakufuku” is written in red on the top of the stand.
