Dish with, enamelled ware

Dish with, enamelled ware

These are commonly called bearded dishes, but the shape of the dish with a circular bell and a part of it dropped into a semicircle is just like a shaping dish. The plate with peony and chrysanthemum design in overglaze enamels is a unique expression of Ko-Imari, and is probably from a similar period to the previous figure. The design of peony and chrysanthemum is expressed in a lively manner with dark underglaze blue, red, green, yellow, and gold colors. The three sides of the reverse side are decorated with a floral design of flowers and branches, such as caresses, and the base is covered with a comb pattern. The plate is decorated with typical Japanese patterns: a Kanbun beauty behind a folding screen, cherry blossoms in a garden, and a porch in thin underglaze blue, with a washbasin next to it. The porch is decorated with butterflies and chrysanthemums in an arabesque style, which is a particularly elegant design for this type of mustache dish. On the reverse side, a plum tree branch design is depicted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels on two sides.
The Ko-Imari dishes in underglaze blue and in overglaze blue, ranging from a plate with peony and chrysanthemum design to a plate in underglaze blue and in overglaze blue, were exported to Europe in a very small portion.
