Chōshi with grape and squirrel design, enamelled ware

Chōshi (wine ewer) with grape and squirrel design, enamelled ware

The body of this bottle gourd-shaped sake bottle with a handle is designed to resemble a gourd with a string tied around it, so the body is covered with string-like floating lines at the top and bottom, and the back of the handle is underglaze blue. The body is decorated with arabesque grapes and squirrels, and the back of the handle with grapes and birds. A hole is drilled in a part of the back and a grape-leaf shaped lid is attached to it. It was made by die-cutting, and the bottom of the bowl still has the fabric pattern.
This elegant sake bottle choshi was probably made between the Kanbun and Enpo periods.
