The painting, which depicts Chinese figures and young children against a background of pine trees on a cliff, seems to be based on an ancient poem by Bai Le Tian entitled “Visiting Friends at Night” found in the “Eight Types of Painting” published by Tenkei at the end of the Ming dynasty (794-1185).
