Kenzan: dish in the shape of a framed picture with design of landscape, iron brown under glaze

Height 4.4 cm, Bore 25.6 x 28.1 cm
This is a rectangular framed dish with a respectful design, the sides of which stand up at an angle, and is finely painted with landscapes and figures in the style of Sesshu, with peonies in the arabesque style in the four windows on the sides and a wave pattern around them. The paintbrush is a little hard, and the finish of the unglazed surface differs from that of other square dishes. The brush style of the inscription on the reverse side, “Made in Yongzhou and Qianshan, Japan, in the province of Yongzhou” is also somewhat different from that of Figs. 118 and 152, but it is similar to the style of the inscription on Fig. 154, “Ie brother Hohyoyo”, which may have been written in this style when it was written in the manner of the Teika family. The characters of Yongju and Qianshan show the habits of Qianshan. The painting on the reverse side, however, is dated Hoei Hei-do, which corresponds to the third year of the Hoei era.
