There are two types of flat vases: one with a two-tiered mouth rim and the other without a folded rim like this vessel. The former type is unique to eastern Japan, while the latter type is common throughout the country, and both types were used side by side in eastern Japan. Although the clay is rich in iron, it is very good for firing.
