The front of the lid of this simple inner box is marked “Shugakuin Oniwa-yaki Water Jar” and the label on the back reads “Made by Ubei Takahata, potter in front of the Shugakuin Shita-no Ochaya (Tea House) on August 11, Kyoho 11 C.E., under the care of the Emperor Reigen”. If we are to believe the inscription, it was made in Shugakuin by a potter named Ubei Takahata. The design is based on a carved Mishima style, and a thin ash glaze is applied to a Shigaraki-style base.
