This is the most famous of the wooden rice tea bowls, and there are other sets of five of this type. The bowl-shaped form with a high foot is also excellent, and red lines are drawn around the rim, waist and foot, while the body is decorated with a poem written in Kibai’s distinctive bold handwriting. Kibai’s calligraphy has a refined taste and is highly regarded even among the calligraphy of the literati of the end of the Edo period. The signature “Kibai-zo” is also written in red inside the foot.
