This is a famous example of a kibai incense container from ancient times, with the lid made from the shell of a crab and the eyes hollowed out so that the eyeballs can move. The lid of the accompanying box is inscribed with the words “Kaimen-shu Kibai-saku” and there is a letter attached to it addressed to Shimoda Kyuho. This is a work that is typical of Kibai, who liked to make witty and humorous works.
