A hibachi is a circular shallow-bowl furnace supported by a tripod or five legs, and corresponds to today’s brazier. In the Heian and Kamakura periods, it was used as an incense burner in front of a Buddhist temple as one of the Buddhist ritual utensils in esoteric Buddhism. This medium-size vessel is made of fine white clay and has a four-petaled floral motif carved on the upper surface at the large joint between the tripod and the ash pan. It is accompanied by a lid with a hemispherical openwork floral design.
