Ryōnyü: tea bowl, known as “Iwao”, Black Raku

Height: 8.3 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.1 cm, Foot Diameter: 3.9 cm
Black Tea Bowl: Compared to the “Ko no Hi” style, this tea bowl exhibits a much more deliberate and deliberate design. The entire body is thickly formed, with a strong, flat vertical ridge running along the exterior, and the waist is sharply carved with a bold, angular profile.
The area around the foot is finely chamfered; the foot itself is small with a flat, folded rim, and the interior of the foot is also carved down to a small size. A well-fused, smooth black glaze is applied, leaving only the foot and the area immediately beside it uncovered. The lower section bears a mark commonly known as a “pre-firing mark” or “pre-fire mark,” which was used prior to the Tenmei Great Fire. On the underside of the lid, Takusai has inscribed: “Made by Kichizaemon, Black Tea Bowl, Iwaho, Left (Signature).”
This piece was created between the ages of fifteen and thirty-three, during the period when he inherited the name Kichizaemon.
