Ryōnyü: shallow tea bowl, known as “Seiryo”, Red Raku

Height: 6.4 cm, Mouth Diameter: 14.7 cm, Foot Diameter: 6.4 cm
This is a generously sized, flat tea bowl with a rim that curves inward, a body tightened by a band of grooves, and a strongly flared lower section. The footring is also generously sized, shaped with a fluid, expansive touch. A large, swastika-shaped tea pool is carved into the interior, while irregular, wave-like glaze cracks encircle the area between the footring and the waist, revealing the white, soft clay beneath. Yellow clay was applied to the interior and exterior, leaving brushstrokes visible, and a transparent glaze was applied on top, resulting in a vivid red Raku finish.
Fire-induced color variations create a distinctive pattern on part of the exterior and the interior. A Chinese character seal is clearly stamped beneath the glaze on the side of the foot. It forms a pair with the black tea bowl shown in Figure 143.
On the underside of the box lid, Kyukosai has inscribed: “Tea bowl by Ryōnyū, red, Seiryō, black after-glaze inscription, Teshakukyō (signature).”
