Excavated from Yamajinishi Kiln, Yamaji-cho, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
15th century
Height 16.5 cm, mouth diameter 17.6 cm, body diameter 12.3 cm, bottom diameter 12.5 cm
This vase appears to have appeared somewhat later than the previous vase. The flattened, thick oral cavity is an exaggeration of the previous Buddhist vase, but it is more than a variant; it was fired throughout the Muromachi period (1333-1573) and is not rare.
The flat body of this vase is identical to the body of a koshi incense burner of the same period, and it is thought to have been made around the beginning of the 15th century. It is made of high-quality grayish-white clay and is water-glazed with a separate foot. The ash glaze has a beautiful light green color and a stable glaze tone. Although there are some repairs to the mouth rim, this is one of the finest wide-mouth vases in the Zon style.
