Excavated from Hironoda Kiln, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
14th century
Total height 7.6cm, mouth diameter 5.3cm, body diameter 7.2cm, bottom diameter 4.8cm
This is a rare example of a small-sized, narrow-bodied goshi with a 0.5 cm short opening and a thick round carved vertical line on the body that looks as if it were a smaller version of a bunshukai. The body is molded with a grayish-white base and water-ground. The lid is 6.7 cm in diameter and has a 2.2 cm diameter protrusion on the back. On the upper surface, a ring-shaped cord is placed in the center, and on either side of the cord are two monkeys in a prone position with their arms and legs spread out toward the cord. On the margin, two small chrysanthemum seal flower patterns are stamped in two places on both sides, in a combination of three on each side. The iron glaze is brownish-brown, shiny, and stable, while the shaft pools in the recesses are blackish-brown and varied.
