Many types of small wares are found in Kosedo that are thought to have been used for Buddhist rituals throughout the entire period. There are also small bowls and plates that do not seem to have been used for practical purposes, and they are called small bowls or small plates. They are all covered with ash or iron glaze.
This small cup is a small form of a Kosedo glazed flat tea bowl and should be called a small bowl. It may have been used as a Buddhist altar. It is made of a rather coarse yellowish-white clay, and the iron glaze is thickly applied, but the outer surface from the waist to the bottom is left as it was when exposed. The iron glaze shows a stable blackish-brown luster and has reached the level of perfection as an ancient Seto glaze.
