The so-called Chinese tea containers imported from China between the late Kamakura (1185-1333) and Muromachi (1333-1573) periods are known by their shapes, such as “jyoshu,” “oumi,” “bunrin,” “eggplant,” and “maru,” but the small jar shown here is closer to a maru tea container. This is the first Koseto tea caddy that can be dated back to the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The base is a grayish color with a slight iron tinge, but the clay was selected for small jars and was ground thin. The iron glaze is purplish brown with blackish tints and is well fused and shiny.
