Although a few bowl stands of similar shape were produced in the Nara and Heian periods, the so-called tenmokudai was newly introduced from China along with tenmokucha bowls. Most of them were made of lacquerware, and very few of them were made of ceramics. In Kosedo, more than a dozen examples have been excavated since the late Kamakura period (1185-1333). This Tenmokudai with inlaid flower design dates from the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and is one of the few pieces of material from which the entire form can be obtained.
