It has been said that the three chinkansen lines on the body of wide-mouth jars are unique to Tokoname, but it has recently become clear that they were fired in various medieval celadon kilns in various regions. The earliest examples of this type of jar are found at the Sanage kiln at the end of the 11th century, and the Tokoname type is part of the expansion of this type. This three-striped jar is thought to date from the early 12th century, as it still has a bulging body and the three-striped design on the body is clearly double-lined. The clay is dense and slightly iron-enriched, with a reddish hue that harmonizes with the bright green ash glaze over it. Among the many Tokoname sanjiki jars, this is one of the finest.
