This is one of the typical large jars of the mid Kamakura period. In the Kamakura period, the neck of large jars became narrower and the transition from the neck to the shoulder was gently curved, making the joints less noticeable. The mouth rim is now folded back to the letter “N” to provide a wide green band, a technique common to jars, which was intended to protect the mouth rim as it became larger in size.
