A type of Kutani ware. During the Bunkyu period (1861-4), Matsuya Kikusaburo of Komatsu in Kaga Province (Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture) lamented the fact that the characteristics of Old Kutani had long since fallen into disuse, and that all painted decoration was red and gold. The name “Ao-kutani” was coined for the first time in this period. In addition, Aote Kutani is sometimes used to refer to Ao-te Kutani, products of the Yoshidaya kiln, as well as Aochibu and Kutani-dyed ware, but this is incorrect.
