Awataguchi Zenpo

marusankakusikaku

Wabibi tea master of the mid Muromachi period. Also called Zensuke. A disciple of Shuko. Lived in Awataguchi (Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto) and was praised by Shuko as a tea master with a beautiful heart because he enjoyed both eating and drinking tea in a single heated pot throughout his life.
He also loved to use an eggplant-shaped teakettle. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, through Rikyu, had a copy of this kettle made by Tsuji Echigo, a potter in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), and it has been handed down to Ryoonji Temple in Awataguchi, Kyoto. He was formerly a samurai from the northern part of Japan, and his name was Tanaka Hyobu Daisuke.
