12th century
Height 25.7 cm, mouth diameter 15.3 cm, body diameter 16.9 cm, bottom diameter 7.1 cm
This vase is descended from an ash-glazed wide-mouth vase of the late Heian period, and was widely produced in the early days of mountain tea bowl kilns in the Tokai region. The large, trumpet-shaped neck and the body are separately joined, indicating the early form of this bowl. It is a neatly made piece of clay with a rolled-up cord. The firing is relatively good, and the surface is darkened by smoked firing. The shoulder is inscribed with “Dai” (large) in writing. This inscription is often used in Tokoname and other regions. It may have religious significance.
