Excavated from Anshuike Sutra Mound, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture
12th century
Height 36.2 cm, mouth diameter 20.8 cm, body diameter 33.5 cm, bottom diameter 15.0 cm
This sutra mound was excavated from the mountain behind the Kumano Hayatama-taisha shrine. The neck is thick, and the edge of the mouth is sharply ground without a fold. The shoulders are somewhat lacking in tension, but it was probably made in the 12th century. The clay is yellowish-white and rich in sand. The outer surface retains the pressure marks of tapping. There is an inscription on the shoulder in 箟描.
The firing is quite good, but the natural glaze on the shoulder has not yet melted, giving it a yellowish sesame appearance.
