Born in Tokyo on May 23, 1893 (Meiji 26), he founded the Ceramic Society of Japan in 1949 (Showa 24), became its president, and published “Tōshi” in April 1953 (Showa 28), where he remained until his death on August 23, 1969 (Showa 44). He died on August 23, 1969, at the age of 76. He was a well-known collector not only of antique ceramics but also of paintings, calligraphy, and a wide range of other antiques. In May 1968 (43), he established the Umezawa Memorial Museum to house his entire collection.
