Kakiotoshi
Kakiotoshi

This is a type of pottery in which a pattern is not painted with a brush, but is first applied with paint, glaze, or decorative clay to the entire surface, and then the pattern or the area between the patterns is scraped off and the pottery is fired. The result is simple, robust, and lovable. In the Chinese porcelain of the Zizhou kiln, the clay is first painted white and then coated with iron pigments, after which the patterns or intervening spaces are scraped off with a knife.
