When large pieces are formed on the potter’s wheel, they are easily deformed and difficult to handle when transported to the drying area. Therefore, it is common to form the pieces on a small board fixed with clay on the potter’s wheel in advance and transport it to the drying area together with the board. This small board is called a turtle board. The four corners of a square board are usually trimmed off and two cleats are attached to the back, and the name “turtle board” is probably due to its turtle-like shape. In recent years, circular turtle boards have appeared and are sometimes called maru-ita.
