Kushi koudai (comb-shaped plate) is a distinctive feature of dishes produced by the Okawachi kiln, the official kiln of the Hizen Saga clan, and is painted with gosu in the shape of comb teeth. Products with a comb-shaped plate are called “Kushite” or “Kushite ware”. The products of this kiln are so-called Nabeshima ware, and are exclusively for the use of the feudal lords and not for sale to the general public. Since the height of Nabeshima plates was usually higher than that of other types and they were not stacked, the outer surface of the plate was decorated with a comb-shaped or cloisonne pattern.
