Sakurai Valley Kiln Site Group

marusankakusikaku

This is a group of Sue ware kiln sites located mainly in Nohata, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture (formerly Oaza Nohata, Sakurai-dani Village, Toyono-gun). The kiln sites are scattered on a Pleistocene hill spreading at the southwestern foot of Shimakuma Mountain (112 meters above sea level). This kiln site group flourished mainly during the Kofun period and dates back to the end of the 5th century and the first half of the 6th century. The only kiln sites in the Kinai region that date back to the late 5th or early 6th century are the Touyuu Kiln and Senriyama Kiln in Osaka, as well as the Sakuidani Kiln. The size of the Sakurayadani kiln site complex is not clear, but there are several dozen kiln sites known to exist today. These kiln sites were one of the few local kilns in the 5th and 6th centuries, and their products were supplied to the neighboring areas.
However, the location of this kiln site group is geographically close to that of the Tōeung kilns, and there are no significant differences in the types of products or production techniques compared to those of the Tōeung kilns.
