Sama (narrow space, zama)

marusankakusikaku

A hole in the lower part of the kiln chamber wall through which the fire passes. The hole leading from one chamber to the next is called Oku-Zama, and the hole leading from the front chamber to the next chamber is called Mae-Zama. The name of the chamber is changed according to the time of firing. There is also the term “hizamasama hole,” which is also used to refer to the vent. In the Hizen region, it is called onzanos. There are two types of sama: horizontal sama and vertical sama, with horizontal sama found in the Tokka Kiln in China, the Arita Maru Kiln, and the Kyo Kiln. Vertical sama is found in Seto Kogama and is unique to the region, originating in Seto during the night of Genwa Kan’ei (1615-1444), and is said to have come from the mouth of a castle gun barrel.
