There is a Shigaraki ware called Shichido-yaki. According to an old man, “Shichido-yaki is pottery that has been fired seven times after being taken out of the kiln and put back in again. The kilns of Iga and Shigaraki in the past were imperfect, so the parts that were subjected to the heat burned hard, while the backs were fired only to the level of unglazed ware. Therefore, they were replaced with a kiln where the fire was stronger. In this way, the pieces were fired several times until they were completely hardened. This is called “shichido-yaki” (seven times baking).
