Syokiimar (Early Imari)

Syokiimar (Early Imari)

Shokiimari is a period term proposed as excavation research of Arita kiln sites progressed after World War II, and refers to the period from Genna/Kanei (1615-44) to Kanbun (1661-173) among Old Imari wares. Most of them are dyed ware, but in recent years they have become very popular because of their excellent painting and the beautiful coloring of the gosu (mineral pigments). In addition, shards of the handles conventionally called Ai-kutani, sukusaka handles, and pieces with Taimei inscriptions and honorific inscriptions, which are considered proof of Ko-kutani, have been unearthed, causing a great deal of controversy in this field regarding the difference between these wares and Ko-kutani.
