A Chukoh specialty. Gogama tea caddy, by Man’emon, Ochihote. It was picked up by Sagawada Kiroku, a vassal of the Marquis Yodo. The inscription is by Kobori Enshu, and since it was picked up by Ochihote, it is a reference to an old poem from “Ise Monogatari” (“The Tale of Ise”): “If I hear that you are wretched and pick up Ochihote, I too will go to the rice paddies and play with it.
The glaze is moistened and the surface is covered with a thick layer of water. The glaze color is moist and the scenery is interesting. It was passed down to Keiko Tennojiya and Tajima Akimoto, and entered Mitsui Takayasu for 28,300 yen when the Akimoto family sold it in 1917 (Taisho 6, 1917).
